Developer Relations Engineer [US Remote]

Dwolla

Last Updated: 10/05/21

Job Description

👋 Hi, I’m Spencer - Lead Developer Advocate here at Dwolla. I’m looking for a Developer Relations Engineer to join the Developer Relations team (a subset of our larger Technology team). Here is what you can expect to work on in this critical role on my team:

You will support third-party developers integrating with Dwolla’s APIs. This means you will focus on growing our developer ecosystem by creating open-source tools, SDKs and samples that make it simple and delightful to use the Dwolla platform.

The Developer Relations Engineering position is a unique hybrid role that is about 70% software engineering (building/maintaining tools, SDKs, sample code) and 30% advocacy (creating technical content such as videos, blogs, developer documentation… and interacting with the Dwolla developer community).

Our team values patience, empathy and transparency. You will have a lot of support from leadership when you communicate proactively with detailed information about any roadblocks you may encounter. And we are ruthless about protecting our time (aka - no unnecessary meetings or calls that aren’t based on having a clear outcome as to why we’re coming together).

The Dwolla Developer Relations team works closely with the engineering, marketing, sales and product teams to inspire usage of the platform and ensure developers have a first-class integration experience from start to end. You’ll work alongside a diverse team of Developer Advocates that connect with external developers to solve pain points in the Dwolla platform and enhance the developer experience by focusing on code, content and community.

Qualities of Developer Relations Engineers Who Thrive in This Role
🔥 You are a driven, self-starter type of person who isn’t afraid to dig for answers, stays up-to-date on developer trends and is always looking for ways to enhance your knowledge.
🤓 You have both a breadth and depth of experience in different programming languages and have the ability to pick up a new language quickly and run with it.
🤝 This is a client-facing role so you must have the ability to handle tricky situations with grace.
🏆 Although the nature of this work is fairly individualist, the ability to work with cross-functional teams and contribute towards team-specific initiatives is key. What’s expected of a Developer Relations Engineer at Dwolla?

    • Build and maintain developer SDKs that highlight best practices and useful techniques, including careful and thoughtful documentation and examples
    • Write and drive adoption of open-source tooling, samples applications, prototypes and code samples
    • Create technical content, tools, resources and any other materials required to clearly articulate the value of our platform to developers
    • Participate in developer discussion forums and support channels to answer technical and non-technical questions related to Dwolla products
    • Advise product engineering teams on design of external APIs
    • Investigate the experiences of developers as they use the Dwolla platform to identify pain points and improve the developer experiences from initial engagement to implementation and further stages
    • Fix API-related issues reported by developers
    • Understand customer and developer trends, document and report observations to the management team in order to better improve our products
    • Work with Product and Engineering teams on behalf of developers to improve the Dwolla platform
What are the required qualifications for this position?
    • BA in Information Systems, Computer Science (or related field), graduation from an established code school or equivalent career experience
    • Experience working with web technologies and APIs
    • Understanding of fundamental programming concepts; with experience in more than one of the following languages: Java, C#, PHP, Ruby, Python, Javascript or similar development language
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
What else would make you stand out for this role?
    • Experience in Developer Relations (or other customer-facing roles)
    • Experience with participating in an Agile-team environment (scrum sessions and daily stand-ups are our norm)
    • Excitement to work on a remote-first team
    • A desire to challenge and change the status quo
